Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor

I’m tumblin’ for a hot new (to me) r&b/dance band: Young Pharoahs rule. Check them out live in Austin next Friday, May 17th @ Summer Slang—an Empire Control Room opening event!
Listening to a nearly 10-year-old bedroom electro-acousmatic album again: A Faux Composer by Austin K. Yes, sometimes the best Facebook music posts and suggestions are made by poetic music loving friends.

Two very different bands based in Austin, Texas have one thing in common: they both excel at live improvisation. Eclectic collective My Education released A Drink For All My Friends (Golden Antenna, Europe and Haute Magie, U.S.A.) on CD and mp3 format after Thanksgiving, and the free jazz & surf rock association Plutonium Farmers (led by prolific Jonathan Horne) recently celebrated the release of a double LP on vinyl and mp3, Helloha and Index Zero (Wattage Cottage Records).

(Golden Antenna, E.U. and Haute Magie, U.S.A.)
My Education considers their ensemble a learning experience for even its most seasoned members, like Scott Telles (ST 37), and has developed through different phases, maturing into a signature sound that continues to explore the depths of musical expression. The current phase definitely sounds heavier, or more intensely dramatic, with A Drink For All My Friends.
My Education’s Next Live Performances: January 3rd and 10th @ Beauty Ballroom

(Wattage Cottage Records)
Plutonium Farmers’ Helloha and Index Zero features the veraciously talented and passionate Jonathan Horne on vocals and guitar, and distinctly different, dynamic drummers Aaron Dugan and Matthew Armistead, and was recorded live by Steve Albini.
The double LP album is available for digital download at sites like Amazon and CDBaby, and you can order it on vinyl by contacting the band at their website.
Only hours away, and I’m still looking for someone to attend the latest installment of Weird! True Hollywood Tales with me, tonight @ Salvage Vanguard Theater, 8pm.

Will you be my +1? Seriously, I asked a couple of friends, but they’re not dressing up in costume or going out for Halloween. So if you’re not a spambot, email me at diydanna[at]gmail[dot]com.

I’m also attending this candy and audio/visual feast at the ND, featuring Pornohelmut, Total Unicorn, and more. The fun starts after 9pm, for $5.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Ha-ha. Seriously, Austin, Texas can be a scary place for black people. I’ve encountered more prejudice from white liberals in this town than from white conservatives elsewhere in Texas. Maybe because I’ve had to deal with more people (jerks) in the music and art scenes who make assumptions about me based on appearances, without talking and getting to know me. Some conservatives don’t prejudge and have actually talked with me like a human being, equally. *steps off soap box*
But a city full of liberal white people is extremely scary to me!
I live in Austin, Texas. It *should* be scary to you. :-(
Checking in…
I wonder if anyone ever wonders what I do with my days when I’m not freelancing or on the seasonal day job.
Well, wonder no more:

A new favorite music blog demonstrates the love of an Austin music mentor, Esme Barrera, who was murdered on New Year’s Eve.
Here are my thoughts about the life of an inspiring young woman, shared on Facebook, after reading Feminist Music Geek:
I never knew her personally either but remember seeing her around, and have friends who were close to her too. Austin is the biggest small town, where people are more connected than we think, especially in the music community. Hopefully her friends will find comfort in that, and cherish their friendships more because of that sense of connection, despite losing someone they cherish so suddenly.
Other tributes include For Our Esme B. (where you can make donations to her family to cover memorial expenses), Can’t Stop The Bleeding and Girls Rock Camp Austin, at which Ms. Barrera served as a counselor.
There’s also a tribute tumblr for Esme.
